Mission and goals

The Sławomir S. Skrzypek NBP Money Centre was established to popularize knowledge about economics and the history of money. We try to provide education in a way that is attractive, using various forms of presentation and modern technologies. The NBP Money Centre activity is aimed at reaching a wide audience and familiarizing them with issues related to the development of economics and money circulation, the functions that money has served throughout history, as well as the history of the creation and evolution of the banking system and central banking.

History

The idea behind the NBP Money Centre was initiated by the late Sławomir S. Skrzypek, who tragically died in the Smolensk air disaster. The activities undertaken during his mandate resulted in the establishment and growth of the facility, which is becoming more and more popular every year.

2008

Beginning of the first conceptual work on the facility. Collecting the first exhibits, exchanging experience with similar institutions around the world. Establishing cooperation with experts in the field of economics, economic history and the history of money.

2011

The NBP Management decided to name the Money Centre after Sławomir S. Skrzypek.

2014

Commencement of activities aimed at implementing the architectural design of the facility, approved by the NBP Management. The works covered over 2,000 m2 of space in buildings designated for the Money Centre by the Narodowy Bank Polski.

2016

NBP Money Centre opens to visitors.

2016

‘Building without Barriers’ – the NBP Money Centre receives the Certificate of Accessibility for People with Disabilities from the Integracja Foundation.

2017

‘The Museum of the Month’ by Tourist and Culinary Diary - Explore Poland and its Neighbours with Pola Neis.

2018

‘Sunflowers’ – Jury's distinction for organizing the "Family Saturdays at the Money Centre".

2018

NBP Money Centre has welcomed 100.000 visitors.

2019

NBP Money Centre launches the online booking system for reservations.

2022

‘The best attractions for children in Poland 2022’ - The NBP Money Centre receives a distinction in the category: Best Science Parks and Experience Centres.

2022

Awarding the Narodowy Bank Polski with the Guardian of Memory Statuette in the "Institution" category as part of the 10th edition of the Guardian of Memory award. It was granted for creating and running the NBP Money Centre named after Sławomir S. Skrzypek.

2023

One of the most important changes at the exhibition since 2016 - comprehensive modernization of the NBP Money Centre: key multimedia elements of the NBP Money Centre were replaced or modernized.

2023

NBP Money Centre has welcomed 125.309 visitors.

2024

NBP Money Centre has welcomed half million visitors.

NBP Money Centre’s Patron

Sławomir S. Skrzypek was born in 1963 in Katowice. He graduated from the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, and studied at the Warsaw School of Economics and the Kraków University of Economics. He obtained an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and also completed a Business Management course at Georgetown University. He started his professional career in 1993 at the Supreme Audit Office. In 2001-2002 he was a member of the management board of PKP (Polish National Railways), from 2002 to 2005 he was a vice-chairman of the management board of PKO BP, and in September 2006 he took up the duties of the chairman of this bank. Since May 2006, he was the chairman of the Supervisory Board of TVP (Polish Television Corporation). On January 10, 2007, Sławomir S. Skrzypek was appointed by the Polish Parliament – the Chairman of the Narodowy Bank Polski. On April 10, 2010, he died in a plane crash near Smolensk on his way to the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre. He orphaned three children. He was buried on April 19, 2010 at the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warszawa.
